язык киргизов (См. Киргизы); распространён в Киргизской ССР, а также в Узбекской ССР, Таджикской ССР, Казахской ССР (число говорящих свыше 1,4 млн. человек; 1970, перепись), в Синьцзян-Уйгурском автономном районе КНР, Афганистане. Относится к киргизско-кыпчакской группе тюркских языков. Некоторые особенности К. я.: наличие вторичных (заместительных) долгот (too - "гора", из таF), более последовательное (чем в других тюркских языках) действие губной гармонии, начальное "дж" (киргизское джол - "путь", соответствует турецкому йол, казахскому жол, алòàéñêîìó äüîë è äð.), àôôèêñ ðîäèòåëüíîãî ïàäåæà -íûí/-íèí... с конечным "н", а не "" (хотя в К. я. "" наличествует). Выделяют три диалекта К. я.: северный, юго-восточный, юго-западный или более схематично, две диалектные группы - северную и южную. Южная группа характеризуется частичным замещением долгих гласных дифтонгами, наличием звука "ǝ", отсутствующего в северной, и др. Литературный К. я. сформировался после Великой Октябрьской социалистической революции. Письменность на основе русской графики (до 1926 - арабский алфавит, до 1940 - на базе латинского алфавита).
